View Full Version : Beginner Seaking Advice
Hi i am need advice,
i am interested in buying a paintball marker, for the local woods, for having a bit of a knock about with a mate. We both want to purchase all the correct equipment to pplay all in one. The budget is 230 quid ish. (pounds). I have looked on ebay and have taken something like this into account http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=160193780503&_trksid=p3984.cWAT.m240.lVI
it is on the american ebay and will cost me an extra 130 dollars postage, but i think it looks good. I dont think i need a5 for sniping with ghille suits in the forest. Or do i?
What is and what are the features of a flatline barrel.
Is there anything better to buy for sniping?
I am wanting something reliable, easy to fix/maintain. etc.
What paint is best?
is a 98 custom good enough willl it shoot 50 meters accuratley?
Please help me im new.
Regards
Stuart

Now right about now I could go on and type a 1000 word reply explaining both why that would be a bad buy and then going on with a specific course of action.
However it's late, I'm half pissed and would rather be ermmm... carry on. ;)
Young sir, may I direct your attention towards the stickies at the top of every sub section, please take the time to read them, they will answer all of your questions with regards to "sniping" and first markers.
If however they do not, please feel free to ask away.
I sense you may think "hmmm lot of reading there, I'll buy that gat on US ebay anyway" DON'T it's a mistake you will regret.

well, not fatbob, tony from fatbobs maybe :p who better to give advice on paintball guns than a guy who handles just about every type of marker that comes into this country....?
also, am i the only person who noticed this?
i am interested in buying a paintball marker, for the local woods, for having a bit of a knock about with a mate.
change local woods, to local paintball site with propper insurance, then it'll be legal :)
Unless the local woods is privatly owned and has no public access and you have permission of the land owner then you might aswell play down the high street of where ever you live, ie, you'll be in the brown smelly stuff with the law and possibly having a unpleasant conservation with an armed response unit.
Believe me not even my EGO could out gun those guys with MP5s!
Also Ghillie suits are really effective in paintball.... by the time you have ran up to someone in one they are laughing so much you can just shoot away at them without them even realising!
where i live the chances of getting caught is minimal, its a risk im willing to take.
My only thing with fat bobs is the price i mean its all gettable of ebay (america) for much cheaper. Is fatbobs reliable? Helpful?

i looked into buying from the states but thought better of it by the time you pay the import duties postage ect it wasnt a great saving on buying from the uk
the major deciding factor is you will have no warranty on any item you buy from outside the uk i dont think it is worth it just too save a few quid id rather have a uk warranty any day of the week
support the uk shops as that is where your going too go if something goes wrong with your gear or just plain advise
fatbobs one of the best in this country.. very good and very reliable..
plus you get that 10% extra lurve;)

That risk that you think you might be willing to take, should it fail, will have consequences, and you should think long and hard about what they would be.
For instance say you do get caught and just for arguments sake someone rings the Police and they are told someone is running around the woods with what looks like A GUN ??
The Police then get in touch with the Armed Police who subsequently turn up and clock you running around the woods with your mate carrying what looks like GUNS......do you see where this is heading ??
I would advise that if you are expecting people to help you out on this forum with information, you have a little respect for the hobby / sport your seeking to be involved in.

Well jom2805, you asked questions and have been given advice. With your further posts I doubt you will take some of the advice offered!!??
Shooting on local woods; you say that you may got caught? well if you did, what do you think PC plod will say when he catches a sniper in the woods shooting whatever with a whatever. Hopefully, the Police armed response unit will not shoot you first then ascertain that it was only a paintball marker. However, take your actions into consideration before you give yourself and the sport a bad write up.

1. Buying from EBay USA is possible, but against the terms of EBay for paintball markers. Note the 'Deliver to' of the sale only says USA.
2. On arrival in the UK you will get VAT added at 17.5%, some import duty, and a charge from the courier for paying your fees.
3. It will work out cheaper, faster, legal and with a guarantee to buy in the UK. You can import US gear but you need to be looking for something you can't get here to make it worthwhile.
4. You may be willing to take the risk of getting caught, but we are not willing to ignore it.
5. You risk others by not playing on private land or an appropriate field.
6. The laws have changed since 1 October with the Violent Crime Reduction bill. For responsible players there is no change. The law regarding paintball has been slightly changed, (but anyone sensible complies with the requirements anyway)
Well Said Trigger. You have asked for advice take it. I couldnt guess at the number of years in experience posting here trying to help you.
Dont damage the already tainted reputation of paintball. Its fools who want to "take a chance" that ruin it for the rest of us.
Man you post asking for advice on a forum ( either run by fatbobs or YPC i cant quite remember ) and your saying about buying from ebay usa ? good luck getting it into the country as customs are cracking down on imports let alone firearms. Buy from a UK shop, can't go wrong with justpaintball, don't taint the name of pball by playing in some " woods ", it only takes one kid to lose an eye and its all over the news.
Buy from the UK, be sensible, paintball markers are far from toys, they are a lethal weapon if used incorrectly or in an unsafe enviroment.

this forum is run by and paid for by Fatbobs paintball so I'm' a bit biased.
the thing with advice is you should always listen to it, mull it over then choose to heed it or ignore it
but if you ignore it and then do so at you're own risk and by doing so the police come knocking on your door then paintball gets a bad name then it won't just be the police at your door....

Blimey - knock about in the local woods! ARE YOU MAD! I shat myself when I got pulled in November for speeding by an Armed response unit! Those guys will shoot first then say it was mistaken identity in court later... look at what happened to that bloke from Brasil I think it was when he was in London!
Further to that - you are going to buy a second hand marker - for your first marker and subsequent intro to the sport. You will need to fill it with High pressure air then take it into the woods - possibly untested as well... Coud be a bit of an unnearving time there. Trust me - when your macro line bursts it will frighten the crap out of you... I am talking from experience when mine burst on a new marker - first time out!
I was lucky - on that marker when it burst, the vendor had just brought it to me at a walkon... They also owned the site and fill systems. They had also sold me my air bottle as well. They checked out the marker, my bottle etc immediately, then replaced the lot straight away. I had a faulty burst valve on my bottle - it put too much air into the marker. Weakest link broke - it was the macro line...
I would NOT buy from the US unless there was backup from a UK stockist with it as a warranty. I certainly would not get a marker - from the US EBAY as it is probably knackered and they cannot shift it on their own forums.
More knackered kit and crap paint is sold on ebay than anything else. Fatbobs, Just, LIPS, AMpaintball, Phoenix paintball etc are all viable UK shops that nearly all members of this forum would vouch for... a bit more expensive than the US but peace of mind and safety run high on their priorities. Your safety and that of others is priceless.
my 2p again - oh and I am normally sarcastic about everything - but on this I am giving you serious advise.

I myself have the enviable position of being completely unbiased by virtue of having no affiliation to either fatbobs or YPC.
Yes I'd advise you to go and see lamby and get his help on choosing a new / first marker, but only because he has risen to deity status and knows his shit :)
I also have the unenviable task of being a mod on here and constantly balancing the need to keep the forums a nice place to be and keeping noobs online and therefore funding fatbobs etc etc so play nice, you remember earlier I asked where you are based, yes your oppp north so I'd recommend you go see the man, if you were else where I's suggest you go to another physical shop.
With the violent crimes reduction bill (nanny state through the back door) we as ballers have an interest to protect and are offering you fair advice to keep you and the general populas safe and under the government radar.
Ad now if you'll excuse me I'm off to ebay to buy some corkswrews before they become illegal

Isn't it nice to feel wanted Jeff?
:D
Happy new banning stick Year...
Im another for the burst macroline, i filled my undies with a slight lumpy brown substance when it happend, If your up north then take a trip over to fatbobs, not only will you be supporting the uk paintball scene but you will have a decent shop who will offer you great after sales service.
Frosties, if you look you'll see it's new stuff from an ebay store he's thinking of buying.
Jom2805, if you do decide to buy the package, once you've added import duties and whatever as has been previously mentioned the price goes up. Then if you decide you want to use your stuff at a paintball site you'll have to get another CO2 bottle as the one you'll be getting from the states will be a DOT tested one and not legal in this country and no reputable site will fill it.
Also if you read the stickies in the paintball equipment section you'll see one about goggles and how it's always best to try differant ones on before you buy, so you may find that the goggles you get don't suit you.
Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but paintball sites are convrting over to high preasure air ... you cannot use a co2 bottle for HPA... also its a lot easier to fill HPA bottles up at home from a dive tank (with adequate training) then it is to fill co2.
(and just to be original... go see lambchop at the shop ;) )

Although Fat Bob's Church of Paintball has mileage I am sure. I'll do some thinking. Maybe a confessional room in one corner could be a possibility.
