An 11-year-old girl died after her parents prayed for healing rather than seek medical help for a treatable form of diabetes, police said Tuesday.

Everest Metro Police Chief Dan Vergin said Madeline Neumann died Sunday.

"She got sicker and sicker until she was dead," he said.

Vergin said an autopsy determined the girl died from diabetic ketoacidosis, an ailment that left her with too little insulin in her body, and she had probably been ill for about 30 days, suffering symptoms like nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst, loss of appetite and weakness.

The girl's parents, Dale and Leilani Neumann, attributed the death to "apparently they didn't have enough faith," the police chief said.

They believed the key to healing "was it was better to keep praying. Call more people to help pray," he said.

The mother believes the girl could still be resurrected, the police chief said.

I wonder what the parents think of themselves? Is this tecnically manslaughter because they did let her die.

I was going to post this in the insomniacs club but it would limit peoples replies tomorrow daytime.

It does seem less than professional now you mention it. I have to admit though the first thing that bothered me about the article was that some morons let their kid die because they wanted to pray rather than go to the doctors for proper treatment. :(

If it was in the UK it would be manslaughter I think, not sure about the US, her being 11 year old and still a minor the parents have a duty of care, one would have thought that there was definiately a case against the parents for technically abuse they would have to prove that there was evidence that prayer was a viable form of treatment and were able to prove that their actions were in her best interest and not negligent.

But then again, thats english law not american.

thing is, you can't prove god does/doesn't exist, hence you can't prove that he can/can't hear our prayers, and so you can't prove that payer could/couldn't of saved the girl..... i think they're idiots and should face the death penalty for letting their child die... but that's only my oppinion :o

Cant possibly comment on the US as never studied it, but in the UK you would have to prove that a reasonable person would have to believe that faith alone would prove to be an adequate course of action for a minor, and as far as I know, blind faith has never been an action that a doctor would reccommend, if she were over 16 the story would be totally different, but they are little are at best awful parents, at worst, responsible for their daughters death    poor girl

I wonder what the kid was thinking, or maybe she did'nt dare to go against what her parents said. I guess if you questioned the power of prayer to heal the girl then you were questioning the power and existance of God, so the parents did not want to quit praying and go to a doctor.

But still though, geez guys! don't pray to fix something that's easily treated

Or that I don't have an invisible, etheral, friend at my side at all times......

But that doesn't mean that its true

Your post made me say "Wow, he's right" out loud. That's so true it's scary. Before CCTV and law enforcement like we see today, maybe religion was introduced to keep people in control through paranoia. Kill someone? God will see and he will send you to Hell. Going to steal something? nope, God won't be impressed.

Now we have CCTV and tazers.

Who knows, maybe it's all true and we will go to Hell for getting angry at the dead girls parents and having no faith. Boy would my face be red! :o

You see i totally agree.

The church and the archibishop of cranberry babble on about global warming destroying us all and any1 who uses a patio heater is condemned to stand next to the tall table in hell with the cookies that you cant reach.

but global warming or "climate change" has killed no body not even a little boy who built a a house of ice in africa. yet religious wars having killed billions of people so what do you rearlly think the downside to humanity will be!.

Religion has and always will be a means of population control. Scare the people into thinking an invisible man in the sky is watching you all the time and they are less likely to step out of line.

A scared population is a controllable population. Take the war on terror that we have at the moment. So where are these terrorists, the truth is that there arn't actually any. We are searched thoroughly before getting onto a plane to convince us that terrorism is such a problem that even we are being searched.. it must be bad.

Look at it logically boys and girls, if you were a terrorist wanting to kill 300 people would you really go to the trouble of getting on a plane, or would you just walk into the nearest shopping centre.

Global warming, don't get me started. 1000 years ago we went through a medieval warm period but I am at least 75% sure there were no cars then. And moreover, the UK used to be a sevannah. Maybe it's my car that has caused global warming on Mercury, Mars and Neptune, or maybe it;s the massive star we have on our doorstep, we call it the SUN and it's activity increases and decreases in cycles.

But a guilty population convinced they are causing global catastrophy will not only accept increases in prices in the name of the planet, they will actively demand it.

But not a sensible population. Now if only we can inject some sense into people.

So what have we learnt:

Religion was invented to control people, nowadays people are dying because of it.

Global Warming is a natural cycles, but we are being taxed for it and feeling guilty if we forget to turn a lightbulb off.

We are not allowed cool films or computer games because psychos will blame Doom for Tetris for making them kill their family.

This is depressing, no wonder people kill themselves! :(

My faith in humanity has never been lower than in year 12 General Studies.
"Can anyone tell me who David Blunkett is?" "Isn't he the President of England?"

"What is global warming?" "Well uh, people keep leaving their heaters on in America and it's making the planet too hot?" "No you idiot, it's AC in America that's making their side too cold, which makes our side too hot!"
