I have just started to get the gear for paintball as my mate keeps talking me into going and I am forever either getting painted head to foot or pulling of some real trick shots. I bought a Tippmann 98 from the site we go to who have recently replaced their equipment it is a basic 98 not a custom or anything clever. I have been looking on the net for bits and pieces and came across a video of someone striping a 98 custom and I couldnt see any real difference other that some sort of canister behind the trigger. Am I right in thinking that any upgrades for the custom and custom pro barrels, hoppers, e grips etc can be fitted to my basic 98?

Yeah, all the upgrades for the 98s are the same. The Custom, platinum, etc are all the same basic 98 with some of the upgrades there as standard.

First thing I'd do if I was you is get a different barrel, I wouldn't upgrade it too much as the 98's a pretty basic marker and once you get into it a bit more you may want something with some more power. But if you get yourself a cheap-ish barrel (12" J&J or something) then you'll notice a big increase in accuracy over the standard barrel.

I'd play with it just like that for a bit, try and get yourself to some walkons and get talking to some of the other people there, you should get a lot of good advice.

I happen to repair 98's and 98 customs at a local field to me. The only difference I have seen is that early 98's the front handle is all metal and the trigger guard is part of the chasis. with the custom 98 it has a detachable front handle, a detachable trigger guard and there are more holes and cavities to custom it up with. Oh and also the grip is different pattern. :)
