a few weeks back i got one of them fat bobs complete air systems gizmo's
http://www.fatbobspaintball.co.uk/acatalog/Complete_Air_Systems.html
i screwed the reg into the bottle and tightened it up with an allen (is dat how u spell it?) key
i went round today to this guy i know who shoots air rifles and all other sorts of air guns and fills his own air bottles, so i figured he cud fill mine. anyways, i went round to this guys house and he tried to fill it for me, but it didnt work, nothing showed up on either his pressure guage on his dive tank or on the one on my reg. now on this reg i got in the package, there are 4 things stikking out. there is the pressure guage, the little thing that has the dust cap on, and two things which are hexagonal, one stikking out directly opposite the pressure guage (you followin this? lol) and one in line with the thing with the dust cap on, but higher up. there was air coming out of the latter hexagonal thing.
now i dont really know anything about bottles and regulators but ive thought of all the things i can that might have gone wrong. first up, the hexagonal thing the air was coming out of, what is it and what's it's use? ive looked at it closely and there appears to be a small hole in the middle of it which leads down to a copper piece. now please do correct me if im wrong but is this the burst disk? because if so it looks burst, it appears to be split and folded to one side. me being an eejit, i didnt check to see if it came burst so i cant verify anything along those lines, it may hav burst when the dude tried to fill it but is that liekly to happen?
Secondly, he screwed an adaptor onto the actual part that screws into my gat, is that wrong. and thirdly, what is the thing that has the dust cap over it?
lastly, (i hear them all breathe one big sigh of relief) does the reg act as an on/off valve so can you take it off the marker with it still with air in?
i will be very thankful to anyone who helps me cos heck, dat wus one long post so if u even bother to get to the end of it ill be amazed
cheers

Right Sounds like you wrecked it first the is no allen key to fasten the regulator to the bottle.
Second you don't fill these like it a CO2 bottle
And third the dust cap covers the fill nipple.
Compressed air can be very dangerous if you don't know what you are doing ask dont guess.
Sent you a PM
Right - here's my take on it:
The hexagonal bits are the burst disk holders. The one near the bottle is the high-pressure burst disc and the other one will be a low pressure bust disc. When boyo tried to fill your bottle from the front, it put 3000 psi into a part that is designed for about 800 psi. So the burst disc has gone (unsurprisingly). You might also find that the reg has been damaged, but hopefully not.
Get a new burst disc, tell your 'friend' that they're an idiot for trying to fill your tank with 3k psi when they obviously didn't know what they were doing. The only way to fil lthat bottle is through the FILL NIPPLE (hence the name).

lucky ? yes, silly ?, ok yes.
you could have both been killed in that instance. if you know what a grenade does then youre starting to get the idea.
my mate had a hose fitting blow on him as he was listening to the hissing sound. it exploded, he lost 30% of his hearing in one ear and had a 4" cut in his head from the impact, and concussion. and that was a LOW pressure explosion,
ps, this was only last week.
;)
moral of the story.
be careful, dont piss around with air if you dont know what youre doing. fat bobs are not responsible for items once they leave the shop, but this incident could have a detremental effect on future sales of air equipment. maybe that is a good thing. if you cant get hold of it, you cant kill yourself. simple as that.
Lucky to be alive mate. Luckily the burst disk done exactly what it is meant to do and burst!! :)
Like Damien and Tom said, and this goes for anyone out there... please find out what is the correct procedure for filling bottles. Not only do you endanger yourself but people around you if this is done incorrectly. :(
Give your mate a slap then go and see someone at a site that fills air on the correct way to go about it :)

at least some good came out of my stupidity and carelessness
i now see there have been many, many safety messages put up on this forum about air by andy
if anyone is reading this i didnt know what i was doin and i trusted this guy cos he said he'd filled things before but ive been reading stories of HPA accidents and now i realise that it is safest to get it filled at a site whatever
so moral of the story is: heed advice given by experienced players and never do anything with HPA unless you happen to be qualified at filling tanks, don't leave anything to chance

At least you have pointed out to others how unsafe this sort of thing can be in the wrong hands....
Not you in my opinion that is stupid, but the person who tried to fill your air system. The problem is a lot of people 'claim' to know what they are doing, when in effect they do not. All you did was take the word of someone who said they knew what to do.
Best advice is to get it done at a paintball site, see how they do it :)

i completley agree. hence the phrase. "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing";)
Better to look a bit stupid on here than be a lot dead in some shed somewhere! Now that would be really stupid. Nothing wrong with asking someone if you aint sure.

plus im used to looking stupid so if i ask some seemingly stupid questions about technical stuff at a later date ill jus be living up to the reputation, but afterwards at least ill still be alive to annoy you all with these incredibly annoying posts
:D
Annoyance I can live with, dead just puts a downer on the day. Scratch7, stay annoying and do every one a favour. We don't do dead. :D
