First time poster here.
Myself and two of my mates have just purchased our first markers, Tippmann 98c's, and we're looking to convert to air rather than using CO2.
Do we need to change anything on the marker ie. adapter for gas canister and, do you need a proper compressed air canister or can you just fill the CO2 canister with air?
Also any tips on upgrading these babies would be much apprieciated, like what's the best barrel to get and such like
I don't know about air (quite happy with co2 at the mo) but you will need some sort of HPA kit (I'm sure someone else can help) but I do know a tiny bit about some other bits.
Barrels... anything but stock. I recently bought a Terminator barrel (which I had to get a LAPCO barrel adapter to use as the gun is from the newer mold) and my Teardrop barrel has arrived now (got to wait until next walk-on to use it though). The terminator worked great, as did the barrel adapter. Only thing with that barrel is if you get a ball break in the tube you WILL need to clean it out. A friend of mine is using a Progressive which he likes a lot.
I have installed a tippy double-trigger which has helped me up my fire rate considerably. Because it isn't an electro marker I don't use the traditional eblade style 2-fingered mega tap, I tend to just hammer the bottom half of the, now longer, trigger.
Best upgrade I've gotten so far has to be the hopper. Halo TSA LCD Backman. Decent capacity and feeds at just the right speed when set to medium (it does have a faster setting).
My next purchase is going to be a Palmer stabalizer (reputed to be one of the best around). My mate with the progressive barrel has one fitted to his 98c and he is very happy with it.
Finally, little tip no.1 put an o-ring around the base of the elbow to reduce the amount of wobble you get. Works a treat! (be sure not to block the feed hole :) )
First of all NEVER fill a Co2 bottle with compressed air.
If you get an airbottle with a preset reg (eg 3000psi bottle with 3000psi preset reg) you will be able to screw it straight onto your 98c without any changes to the marker.

i run both a tippy 98c and an a5 both very good and reliable
to run on air (hpa) you will need a new bottle and reg fb's do the following
0.8L bottle - CE with 3000psi preset regulator
Price: £69.98 [Euro€104.97]Including
i use this on both my markers without any probs althogh i am considering getting a bigger bottle ,
With regard to barrels i have just brought a flatline for the a5 havn't used yet though so can't comment yet but on the 98c
i use a 12" smartparts teardrop very accuarte and long range surpised more than a few i would reccomend this to anyone,
hope that helps

i disagree with bunnie blaster i tried my flatline out with my 98c and it was really poor on the range i put the volocity up and still the range was poor. i think it is a waste of money u can get much better barrels for the money. go on www.pbreview.com and look up the 98c or a-5 for PROPER barrels

Speaking with the experience of a person who started with a tippy 98 with flatline barrel it DOES make a difference and is a PROPER barrel. The whole idea of the flatline is it puts the backspin on the ball (hence the curved barrel) which not only gives it range but also rather than travelling in the standard paintball "arc" it travels flat and allows you to pick people off with greater accuracy.
I had many great games on the speedball field shooting people through the slats of the pyramids.
If you can afford it it is a worthwhile investment and for the tippy 98 looks great just for the shroud over the barrel.!;)

yeah, i wouldt advise you pay that much for a barrel (100+ for flatline correct me if wrong) for that you could get a dye boomstick and that would rape the flatline<3
Becasue the way flatlines work you need really good paint for it to be accurate, as when the ball is spinning that fast paint that is consistently shaped will go all over the place.
I've done up my tippmann A5 with E-grip and flatline, this is great but if you don't get the volocity right for the flatline, paint goes no where and breaks when fireing fast.

and don't we know it lol
However, when you do get it right, its great for wood ball and punter hunting

flatline barrel is really good when its working right and really bad when ist working bad
temperature affects it almost as much as the quality of the paint i think.
im not sure how much a freak kit costs these days, but you will never regret buying a freak especially when you decide 2 change your marker.
I am looking for a new barrel, as i might be entering tournaments
I know you've recomended a freak but are there any others that offer the same performance

um evil pipe kit springs 2 mind,
if you cant afford a kit then, a large bore dye ultralight is always a winner

if ya go for the flatline on the 98 then u must be willing to take time to try diff paint and mess about alot with velocity .me m8 got one for his 98 and afta loads dif paint and loads messing about it was still the same (shite ballbreaker).he gave up in the end .me on the other hand have the a5 and realy wanted the flatline but afta seeing my m8s skank flatty i was realy unsure ,anyways i did buy one.put it on ,went out an tested with a cpl hundred powerball and premium balls (both cheap ) not one break at all .i was realy realy impressed with distance and accuracy.
now a month later i shot at least 4000 thru it an still not one breakage :D
best barrel ever imo
sack the 98c idea an get an A5 with flatty , u will not be disapointed

ive seen that to. 1 of my mates had a 98c and put a flatline on it and turned it into a blender and my other mate who has an A-5 with a flatline was shootin fine.
For the 98c theres an adapter to put the flatline onto it this is what we put it down to.
Velocitys were basically the same and shooting the same paint but the 98 chopped paint and the A=5 didn't.
Not sure if that is the actual problem but we couldn't tell any different at the time.

The A5 is good with the flatline but it can still break easily if you don't tune it. But like you siad, it was better than my mates 98c flatty , which was a pile of sh*t
