Is there anyone who can recommend a good book for learning how to do a Website? I can use e-mail and browse the web but I don't know where to start on putting my own page up.

Without sounding like a naff answer too much, try searching google for 'website authoring tutorial' and other similar phrases. You'll be amazed how many free resources are out there if you look.

Once you have learnt the basics get your but down to whsmiths and get hold of a copy of advanced web site design (£12.99) this will teach you how to do all the natty stuff like flash animations and how to use dreamweaver.
