Is anyone else here old enough to remember the days when paintball involved using a 10 shot "Splatmaster" that needed cocking eveytime you fired it? Then after 20 shots (2 tubes) you had to unscrew the stock and put in another soda Stream gas cannister, all without someone running upto you and fireing a single shot into your chest, hoping that it burst, because if it didn't the race was on as to who could get there gun ready for fireing again first.

This was a game of stealth and skill, where 15bps was impossible it was more like 15 balls per game, plus you had to work as a team otherwise you had no chance of winning. A bit like the scene in Zulu where one reloaded whilst the other fired.

Then someone invented pump guns and ruined it all

I remember.
the trick if you knew what to do was to go and get a hot drink, drink half of it and drop the powerlets in the remaining half. while they were fairly warm wrap in tissue and put in pocket. this gave you from 30 to 32 shots without reloading. after 20 shots shout reloading, and make reloading noises.then wait with fully functioning gat for someone on the opposite team to come rushing up thinking you were out of gas.:D

Yep, making hissing noises behind trees. You could actually get 17 balls into a splatmaster if you pulled the tube half way out.

I played a couple of tournaments with splatmasters.

Splatmasters and Banner paint. They truly were the good old days.

The splats realistically got 15 balls per 12g powerlet. Our first time players would insist you could get 75 though.

Then there was the Splatmaster Rapied, now there was a ball smegger.

Er yes,but Splatmasters were hi -tec compared to bolt action .62 Daystates.

The daystates did use compressed air though, even if you did only get 40 shots per fill. Didn't they used to weight about 10lbs as well.

Oh yes weighed a ton,and you had to angle them back to load them,so the ball went to the back of the (6 shot) mag. £3.50 for 6 balls I think:eek: ,mind they were that hard you could reuse them a few times:D

And .62 cal. If you think you get bruises now, try being shot by a .62 ball.

I used to have a challenger 62. The great thing was that you could get about 350 balls in a 200 shot hopper and never got any jams.

Don't know the Challenger,however Tippys were all .62.Always wanted a stick feed Tippman SMG,full auto !!!,15 + years ago:D

Are you sure the smeg 68 was .62. Don't think it was. There was a tippmann that used 6 shot clips I remember, this could have been .62. It had a stick on the side like a machine gun.

I remember the first time I saw a Smeg 68, it was at Wakefield (Splatoon when Steve Slavitch owned it), think it was owned by a "Pukin Dog" (That was a team name by the way), we where playing them in a comp. The safest place to stand was right in front of it.

There was the crossman revolver which used .50 cal.

Do you remember the missile shaped paintballs. These were teardrop shaped with a fin at the back. You had to load them one at a time but they were very very accurate.

Aye Al from the SPC told me about them, as you say you had to hand load each one, but he said it was almost worth it for that first ball accuracy. Don't suppose anyone still makes them lol

The Smg was the clip fed gun ,and was .62 I think the "smeg" was a different gun that came later ,with a more common bore, along with the SL68 (?)

The tippman smg was made in both .62 and .68 but the .68 was very rare, both used 5 shot clips that would feed into a stick magazine attached to the gun (3 or 4 clip stick for a 15 or 20 shot burst)

Crosman made the .50 8shot revolver in a 6" or 3" snub nose barrel.

AGA made a .62 conversion of the crosman pistol that held 6 shots horizontal under the barrel with a lift loading system, both ran on 12grams in the grip frame.

Both bushmaster pumps and wgp sniper also made original guns in .62 bore so more guns than you realise were not .68

The splatoon was made in three generations, the first was a cross between a splatty and a 007 nelspot, the 2nd was a pump version with 10 shot feed tube and the third was direct feed pump action. All used compressed air due to the problems with co2 propellent guns causing problems with the law. I have a third gen gun, I used 1st & 2nd gen in my first game 1988 skirmish in south Devon.

try finding .62 paintballs nowadays is almost impossible, I have about 500 for my smg.:)

My old splatmaster totally ruled. I remember having to take a 2 hour bus trip to buy some paintballs from the nearest gun shop that stocked them as a sideline!! Group of 12 year olds walking into gun shops to buy ammo, lol.

The a CO2 sparket breached and blew the handle apart, gutted! We also used to wear dodgy industrial goggles that we had all nicked out of our Dads sheds!:D

When I were a lad, and all that....

Splat's PGP's...then came the Phantom - possibly the bestest ever pump marker ever (and with slam fire too)

aye them were the days - getting them to draw liquid and start snowing so you had that bit more velocity....
